In Brazil, improving student learning outcomes in math is a key focus.
Among OECD countries, Brazil’s student math performance is below average, though it has improved in recent years. Anderfabio Oliveira dos Santos, an administrator at the Education Department for the State of Paraná, shared that he believes Khan Academy is one of several reasons that math performance in his district is on the rise.
In an effort to bring our latest transformative education technology to our international partners, we also implemented a small-scale pilot of Khanmigo, our AI-powered student tutor and teacher assistant. In the pilot, 155 students and teachers in Brazil received access to Khanmigo. William Cardoso, a teacher who participated in the pilot, remarked on how Khanmigo enhances the learner experience: “[Khanmigo is] different from a teacher—sometimes you are ashamed to make mistakes, to say nonsense. Even with a friend, if you ask something very basic, they might say, 'How come you don’t know this?' With Khanmigo, they could ask anything. The platform would try to help them.”
Following positive feedback received during Brazil’s Khanmigo pilot, we are working to bring Khanmigo to 10K students and educators this year.
We are grateful for the support of the Lemann Foundation, the Telles Foundation, VélezReyes+, and Intel, who made this work possible.
