International Program

In 2023-24, we implemented Khan Academy in large-scale pilots in Brazil.

For more than a decade and with support from the Lemann Foundation, Khan Academy has delivered free, world-class educational resources aligned with Brazil’s National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) to empower all Brazilian learners.
Our comprehensive resources cover math, science, and Portuguese for elementary and middle school students, as well as math and science for high school students. During the 2023-24 school year, Khan Academy began collaborating with large public state districts in Brazil to expand access to our proven educational resources. We implemented our proven learning platform in two state districts and piloted Khanmigo in Brazil classrooms.

Implementing Khan Academy in Paraná and São Paulo:

Over the past school year, we worked with state districts Paraná and São Paulo to implement Khan Academy as part of our International Districts Partnerships program. As a result, more than 2.3M users accessed our proven learning platform and 24.6K became Yearly Very Active learners. (Yearly Very Active Learners, or YVALs, represent our deepest level of learning and are associated with higher-than-expected learning gains, according to our efficacy studies).

Participating districts received access to the Khan Academy platform, data-driven insights to enhance student learning, and robust professional learning and support to help educators and administrators maximize use of Khan Academy’s educational resources throughout the school year.

Like the Districts Partnerships program in the U.S., the Districts Partnerships program in Brazil is focused on districts in historically under-resourced and underrepresented communities.
In Brazil, improving student learning outcomes in math is a key focus. Among OECD countries, Brazil’s student math performance is below average, though it has improved in recent years. Anderfabio Oliveira dos Santos, an administrator at the Education Department for the State of Paraná, shared that he believes Khan Academy is one of several reasons that math performance in his district is on the rise.

In an effort to bring our latest transformative education technology to our international partners, we also implemented a small-scale pilot of Khanmigo, our AI-powered student tutor and teacher assistant. In the pilot, 155 students and teachers in Brazil received access to Khanmigo. William Cardoso, a teacher who participated in the pilot, remarked on how Khanmigo enhances the learner experience: “[Khanmigo is] different from a teacher—sometimes you are ashamed to make mistakes, to say nonsense. Even with a friend, if you ask something very basic, they might say, 'How come you don’t know this?' With Khanmigo, they could ask anything. The platform would try to help them.”

Following positive feedback received during Brazil’s Khanmigo pilot, we are working to bring Khanmigo to 10K students and educators this year.

We are grateful for the support of the Lemann Foundation, the Telles Foundation, VélezReyes+, and Intel, who made this work possible.
