SY24-25 Highlights
Thank you.
You’re making an impact! In the 2024-25 school year, your support empowered millions globally, breaking down barriers to knowledge and unlocking individual potential. From students and teachers using Khan Academy in classrooms, to parents tutoring their children, your contributions directly created impactful learning experiences.

Your vital support also allowed us to innovate alongside educators and to harness the latest technology, including AI, to support the learning process. Khanmigo, our AI tutor and teaching assistant, is just the beginning of what’s possible, yet students are already feeling more prepared and asking questions they might otherwise be too shy to ask. In parallel, educators are finding invaluable support that enables them to do more of what they already do well, regaining precious time for the very human work of teaching. Thank you for empowering us to make such a profound difference in the lives of learners and educators everywhere.

We're deeply grateful for your continued partnership as we innovate the future of education.

We published additional efficacy research that demonstrates the impact of Khan Academy
Khan Academy improves learning outcomes by ~20-30%
20
%
Learning gains
Associated with spending 18+ hours on Khan Academy over the duration of the school year
30
%
Learning gains
Associated with learning 60+ additional skills to proficient over the duration of the school year
Our team of efficacy researchers regularly conducts studies to evaluate the efficacy of Khan Academy and determine the impact on student learning. Our latest studies found that if a student spends just 30 minutes a week on Khan Academy over the entire school year—about 18 hours total—they learn about 20% more than we’d normally expect2.

We also found that when students learn two to three Khan Academy skills each week throughout the school year (60 additional skills in total), their overall learning grows by about 30%3.

  1. Khan Academy has conducted multiple efficacy studies with districts that use our KAD (Khan Academy Districts) and MAP Accelerator products. This study included ~350K students in grades 3-8 who completed fall and spring MAP Growth Assessments during the 2022-23 school year.

  1. The study of ~350K students in grades 3-8 mentioned in footnote 2 has been completed three times: in SY2020-21, SY2021-22 and SY2022-23.  As a result, there are ~211K students for whom we have two or more years of data. Comparing these ~211K students to themselves over time, we found that students who increased the number of skills they learned to proficient or mastered by 60 or more compared to the previous school year typically saw ~30pp increase in learning gains, which translates to a ~20-30% increase in learning for an average student in the study sample.

We significantly expanded the reach of the U.S. district partnerships program, our most effective pathway to drive student learning outcomes
Khan Academy partners directly with school districts and school communities across the U.S. Khan Academy Districts, also known as the district partnerships program, combines our beloved educational software and rigorous content with additional tools for districts such as rostering, district dashboards, and services: professional learning for educators and year-long implementation support for school district leaders. The U.S. district partnerships program is our most effective pathway to drive student learning outcomes. Licensed learners in this program are 8-14x4 more likely to reach the recommended dosage of Khan Academy that efficacy studies associate with significant learning gains. In SY24-25, we significantly expanded the reach of this program, reaching nearly 1.5M licensed learners across 795 U.S. districts. This represents a 52% YoY increase in the number of students reached, and a 38% YoY increase in the number of districts we partner with.

The district program is also our most effective pathway to reach learners in historically under-resourced communities. Compared with U.S. public school benchmarks, the district program reaches a higher percentage of Black and Hispanic children, and children impacted by poverty.

In the U.S. district program in SY24-25 104.9K students spent 18+ hours on Khan Academy (Yearly Very Active Learners) and 114.1K reached 60+ skills to proficient (Yearly Proficient Learners). These metrics reflect the level of usage associated with accelerated learning in efficacy studies.

  1. Combining our beloved tools and services is what makes the district partnerships program 8-14x more effective at driving student learning outcomes compared with independent learning. In SY24-25, licensed learners in the district program were 8x more likely to become YPLs and YVALs compared with independent learners. Licensed learners in our highest usage districts were 14x more likely to become YPLs and YVALs compared with independent learners.

Students Learn more on Khan Academy with KAD
Combining our beloved platform and AI tutor with additional tools and services designed for districts is what makes it 8-14x more effective at driving student learning outcomes compared with  independent learning.
KAD IS REACHING PRIORITY STUDENTS ACROSS THE U.S.
Compared with U.S. benchmarks, KAD reaches a greater percentage of students in communities experiencing barriers to educational and economic opportunities that result in different learning outcomes.
“Khan Academy gives us the ability to level the playing field, regardless of our students’ socioeconomic background. It’s crucial in a diverse district like ours.”

We launched Writing Coach, a free writing tool for teachers and their students
We introduced Writing Coach, an AI tool that supports students with actionable feedback throughout the writing process, helping them to improve their writing and clarity of thinking. For educators, Writing Coach handles time-intensive early feedback and provides transparency into students’ writing process. Instead of being worried students are using AI to write their papers, Writing Coach gives educators confidence students are doing the work. Additionally, Writing Coach empowers educators to spend more time fostering creativity and helping students develop their voice.

Writing Coach represents Khan Academy’s commitment to expanding its library of English Language Arts resources. Writing Coach was featured on 60 Minutes in December 2024.

We expanded our
mastery-enabled
content library
Khan Academy’s learning library includes 842 courses in Math, Science, the Humanities, and popular electives like AP Courses, Financial Literacy and Computer Science. In SY24-25, we strengthened our Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) offering, and extended our coverage in Social Studies and English Language Arts (ELA). We expanded our Intro to Computer Science course (Python), added standards-aligned math and science teacher guides, and released new reading and vocabulary courses for grades 4, 5, and 7 through 10. In total, we released 24 new and expanded courses, including a new Middle School Chemistry course, two foundational courses for SAT prep, and Constitution 101, a course built in close collaboration with the National Constitution Center. We remain committed to developing high-quality educational resources for the educators, students, and parents who count on Khan Academy to engage, inspire, and support their success.
#6
We expanded the reach and impact of our international program
Khan Academy reached 62.4M international learners, educators, and parents in SY24-25. A majority of these individuals are the 54.2M grassroots users who use Khan Academy outside of our international districts7 and KhanX8 programs. We launched 2 new KhanX programs in Bangladesh and Pakistan, and set up Khan Vietnam as the newest addition to the KhanX network. Additionally, we expanded existing district partnership and KhanX programs in Brazil, Peru, India, and the Philippines. These expansions included securing our first state-level partnership in India’s southern region with the state of Karnataka, and scaling from 34 schools to 1500+ schools serving 600K students in the Philippines.

Among the 4.1M total learners in our international districts program and KhanX programs in SY24-25, 305.3K became Yearly Proficient Learners and 152.0K became Yearly Very Active Learners. Students reaching these metrics have the deep level of engagement on Khan Academy aligned with greater-than-expected learning growth in efficacy studies.

  1. The international district partnerships program is our most effective pathway to reach learners in historically under-resourced communities and for learners to achieve the dosage of Khan Academy that efficacy studies show results in greater-than-expected learning gains. The districts program includes additional data dashboards and reporting products, as well as implementation support and professional learning services for educators and administrators. Within each country, Khan Academy’s in-country teams work directly with school systems and in close collaboration with government bodies.

  1. KhanX is designed to expand Khan Academy in school districts and government schools internationally. KhanX entities are formed by local sponsors who set up independent, locally incorporated entities (with heavy collaboration from Khan Academy) in each country to run Khan Academy programs in schools. The “X” in KhanX stands for the country name (e.g. Khan Philippines, Khan Pakistan, etc.)

We created new educational experiences for young learners ages 2-8 and conducted an early learning assessment pilot for preschool children
Khan Academy Kids is Khan Academy’s app designed for young learners ages 2-89. The Khan Academy Kids app added new content and interactive learning experiences, including 70+ new social-emotional lessons created in partnership with Harvard professor Dr. Stephanie Jones. Additionally, the Khan Academy Kids team conducted a second pilot of Pre-K math and literacy assessment with 300 students in early learning centers. Through this work, we validated that our assessment experience for young learners is engaging for students and easy to administer for educators.
